Kanye West (also known as Ye) is one of, if not the most influential rapper of all time. He’s released 10 solo albums and is still releasing incredible music after almost 20 years in the industry.
Kanye was born to Ray and Donda West in Atlanta in 1977, but his parents got divorced when he was only three years old. After the divorce, he moved to Chicago with his mother, where he grew up. He began rapping in third grade and started producing beats in seventh grade.

Following high school, he went to the American Academy of Art, quickly transferred to Chicago State University, then dropped out to focus on music soon after.
He started producing beats for other rappers while he was still in school, but didn’t gain much popularity until  2001. In 2001, he made many contributions to a Jay-Z album, titled The Blueprint. He gained popularity as a rapper in 2002, when he made a song with his jaw wired shut just two weeks after shattering it in a car crash.

Kanye is still significant to this day because he’s still releasing incredible music and he is very involved in the movement to free Larry Hoover Sr., a former gang leader who has been in jail for 50 years. West had a meeting with Donald Trump in 2018 to discuss Hoover’s sentence, put a clip of Hoover’s son, Larry Hoover Jr., at the end of a song on his recent album, and he held a concert with Drake in Los Angeles to bring awareness to the movement.
Part of the reason that Kanye is the way that he is today is the death of Donda West, his mother. Throughout his whole life, he was very close with her, even writing a song about her on his 2005 album, Late Registration.

She died in 2007 due to complications from plastic surgery, and Kanye blames himself for it, which tears him apart inside. He believes that, by moving to L.A. with her, he caused her to get the plastic surgery that ended up killing her. Since her death, it appears that Kanye has gone somewhat crazy, which Kim Kardashian, his ex, blames on his guilt over Donda’s death. He has since released an album in her honor, titled Donda.
Kanye is still, to this day, not only a legendary rapper but also very influential in many other fields, such as fashion.
