The Harder Way is a newly released documentary series exclusively on ESPN+. The series
follows University of Memphis men’s basketball team, Tigers head coach and former NBA All-
Star Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, and their mission to bring the city of Memphis a national
championship. Penny has landed Memphis the #1 recruiting class in the country, seemingly
turning Memphis into a potential powerhouse in less than two seasons. The cameras capture the
players and the fans throughout the city. The series also reflects on Hardaway’s overall vision for
the program’s future and his relationship with the city of Memphis. Two episodes have been
released, and 10 more are planned for release across the college season. The sound design,
music, and camera-work are each a perfect reflection of Memphis and the city’s identity as a
whole; including Memphis Tigers basketball. The show is also very well edited, particularly the
intro. The interviews do a great job immersing the viewer into the show, making it seem like a
legitimate fly-on the wall experience. While Memphis fans will especially enjoy the show,
anyone who is interested in watching a great documentary series or any basketball fan should
also check this series out. I’m going to give the first 2 episodes of The Harder Way a 8.5/10.
