Deadly Dive Boat Fire

Deadly Dive Boat Fire

Julia Booth

This past Monday, as some celebrated their day off for Labor Day, 39 people on a dive boat woke up to their boat being engulfed in flames about 20 miles off the southern California coast. After using this boat as means to enjoy the weekend to explore sea life, 34 people died when they were trapped in the sleeping deck as the fire blocked all exits. The five surviving crew members, including the captain, jumped off the boat to avoid the flames.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation as the boat was not required to have a black box or sprinklers aboard. Two mayday calls were made from the Captain but there was a lot of confusion regarding the incident. The boat was destroyed within minutes, likely because of the fuel on board, and the firefighters could only reach the boat in 15 minutes, which was sadly too late.
