Meru is documentary about a group of three climbers who made the first ascent of the
“Shark’s Fin” route that on Meru Peak. It is located 21,000 feet above the Ganges River in
Northern India. Meru is called by some climbers to be the most difficult climb. The three
climbers, Jimmy Chin, Conrad Anker, and Renan Ozturk made their first attempt to climb the
mountain in 2008. Unfortunately, in the first climb, there were severe storms which caused the
climber’s food supply to dwindle down as they waited for the storm to pass. The originally
planned 7-day journey turned into a twenty day one, causing it to be unsuccessful.
After the trios first attempt to climb the mountain, the documentary shows them going
about their lives. Several other groups attempted the climb, but they were all unsuccessful. The
men still had a fire and a desire to attempt to climb the mountain once more.
The film begins at a slow pace, giving a small glimpse into the lives of the climbers. Once
the climbing picks up, so will your interest in the film. The harsh conditions the climbers face
during the journey is mind-blowing to watch. The weather and other obstacles the men faced
to get to the peak is truly amazing. The skill and precision that is needed to climb Meru is
fascinating. If these climbers mad one wrong move, their lives and well as their partners’ lives
could end in an instant.
I would give the film an overall rating of 4.5/5 stars. The documentary does a good job
of getting you attached to this goal of the three men’s. While watching you can’t help but root
for them to summit, which definitely make the plot twist of them not making it to the peak on
their maiden voyage of Meru so devastating for you as well as for the climbers. If you love to
rock climb or have any interest in it at all, this would be a great movie for you to watch.
After watching Meru, I would highly recommend going to High Point Climbing! It is a
new rock climbing gym that just recently opened up in Memphis. They have over 30,000 square
feet of both indoor and outdoor climbing surface, including walls up to 55 feet. They also have a
kid zone a bouldering room, as well as weight and aerobic rooms.
It is a super fun place to go if you are a beginner or an expert. The kids zone is open to
people of all ages and it is a great way to get warmed up for the bigger walls. The kids zone has
several fun and interactive walls which are great for people of any age.
The taller walls have courses that are easy and courses that are more difficult. They also
have around 8 walls with auto-belays so you don’t need to have a partner holding you up.
High point offers classes for climbing, belaying, and yoga. It is a bit expensive, but I think
the overall experience is definitely worth it.
