Body Found at Costa Rica Airbnb

A 36-year old woman from Florida named Carla Stefaniak traveled to Costa Rica with her sister-in-law, April Burton, for Thanksgiving. Burton took a flight home on November 27th, and Stefaniak was supposed to catch a flight the next day.

On the 27th, she took an Uber and toured San Jose. She then returned to the AirBnB villa where she was staying. The Tampa Bay Times reported the last message her family heard from her, was while the power was out and it was pouring rain.

She told her family “It’s pretty sketchy here.” No one heard from her since. The missing-persons report led to the search of an apartment in the San Antonio de Escazu neighborhood on Tuesday. They found blood, and a body outside the villa she was staying in. The family confirmed that the body was in fact Stefaniak. An autopsy revealed that she suffered a blunt force wound to the head and lacerations on the neck and arms.

Bismark Espinosa Martinez, age 32, the security guard at the Airbnb complex, was arrested on Monday after investigators noticed that his story did not match up with the security video.
