Aretha’s Funeral: A Memorable Affair

Aretha’s Funeral: A Memorable Affair

Addison Nixon, A Woman of R-E-S-P-E-C-T

What was supposed to be a memorable tribute to the late Aretha Franklin turned into a
show all about the Pastor. The family trusted this pastor, Dr. William Barber, who had performed
many ceremonies of late celebrities. As the family grieved the loss of the beloved Aretha
Franklin, they expected the funeral to be nothing but respectful, however they were highly
disappointed. Reverend Barber delivered a forty-minute long eulogy about Aretha, but also saw
this as a time to talk about the black lives matter movement. Franklin died of pancreatic cancer,
so the black lives matter movement didn’t have much to do with her death. Not only that but he
also began talking about how many African American children don’t have a father growing up,
or more importantly, sons growing up without fathers. He stated that a man can not be properly
raised without a father, but Franklin raised three sons on her own. This left a bad taste in the
families’ mouth. Many peoples’ attention was drawn to the inappropriate touching of Rev.
Barber with Ariana Grande. Grande performed a tribute song for Franklin, and after she was
finished, Rev. Barber spoke with her at the podium, all the while placing his hand right next to
her right boob and holding her close to him. Whether he meant this as a sexual action or not,
social media immediately took the chance to stretch it into the equivalent of rape. The family of
Aretha Franklin was expecting a respectful memorial for the woman they loved but got met with
something much more disrespectful.
