Chicken Tenders in Soda, Yuck or Yum?

Lauren Beickert, Chef

At the U.S. Open on Monday, a woman was caught on camera dipping chicken tenders into her ice-cold soda. Many people took to social media to voice their opinions on the woman’s strange choice of dipping sauce. 26 year old, Alexa Greenfield, was perplexed by all the attention she got from it. She explained that her dad taught her to do it as a way to cool off the chicken. She also said she liked the taste of coke mixed with chicken, and just kept doing it. She received many tweets, including, “This is legit psychopath status” and “Dunking chicken tenders in coke…white people please…that’s enough already!” A man on twitter named AJ made a good point and tweeted, “Not only do you now have a soggy piece of chicken, you got bread crumb floaties kicking around in your drink now! Smarten up! #triggered.” Some people, on the other hand, are willing to give this combination a try. I know I will definitely be trying this myself soon. Now, if you want to try this yourself, here’s a super easy recipe for grilled Coca-Cola chicken! 🙂
2 cups (16-oz) Coke
1/3 cup soy sauce
1 Tbsp minced garlic
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
1 Tbsp lime juice
6 chicken breasts
1. Combine all ingredients but put the chicken in a medium sized bowl. Stir to incorporate well.  Place chicken in a large gallon sized Ziplock bag. Pour marinade over the chicken. Seal tightly    and store in the fridge for 4-24 hours.
2. Discard marinade and grill until cooked through.
