Crazy Week on the Billboard

Who’s the queen? Who do we call Chun-Li? Where is Astroworld?

Crazy Week on the Billboard

Collin Cardot, Journalist/Barb

On August 3, 2018, artist Travis Scott released his album Astroworld. It is innocent
enough except for the fact that Nicki Minaj released her album Queen the following week. Over
the past week she has had more or less of a breakdown on Twitter. The storm happened because
her album debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200, while Travis retained his number one spot.
Nicki felt like she deserved the spot and went to great lengths to prove her album was the rightful
owner of the number one spot. This is not the first flack she caught for her album. Nicki had
mixed reviews for one of her songs “Barbie Dreams.” Nikki took shots at rappers like Young
Thug, Drake, and Meek Mill. She took absolute shots at Travis on August 19, when she
tweeted “I put my blood sweat and tears in writing a dope album only for Travis Scott to have
Kylie Jenner post a tour pass telling ppl to come see her & Stormi…” It is worth noting that the
Kylie Jenner effect does not always equal sales, when Kylie dated Tyga he only sold 2,200
albums first week. Nikki is accusing Travis of boosting sales numbers by selling merchandise
and other things that do not come with the album. However, Nikki isn’t entirely innocent of this
either. She is suspected of adding a single she featured on to her album. This song has over a
hundred million streams on Spotify alone. In fact, she went on her apple music radio on August
22 nd and dubbed Travis her “Sucka of the week.” Nikki claims to have talked to Travis and says
he knows that he does not have the real number one album in the country. Travis has not
responded to Nicki, but he moved his seats at the VMA awards away from Nikki.
Nikki goes on to talk about off topic things, like the numbers she did with her debut
album. She even compared herself in a sense, to Harriet Tubman by saying “All the QUEENS I
remember, SHOOK **** UP!!!!!!!! Queen of the week may go to HARRIET TUBMAN!!!!!!…”
She did get Harriet’s name trending after the comparison, so props to her. She also talked about
how Spotify put Drake’s face on every playlist. She was upset because she was punished by
Spotify for playing her music early on her Apple Music radio station. She also seemed upset
because they were seeming to reward Apple Music’s biggest asset (Drake) by plastering his face
over every playlist on Spotify.
