Cam Newton

Rosie Egan, Journalist

Cam Newton has recently been under fire for making a sexist comment in an interview. Charlotte Observer’s Jourdan Rodrigue asked Newton if he enjoyed his teammate’s progress in his routes. Newton responded “It’s funny to hear a female talk about ‘routes’. It’s funny.”

Afterwards, Rodrigue went to twitter to express her frustration. She said “I don’t think it’s ‘funny’ to be a female and talk about routes. I think it’s my job.” She is entirely right. Newton has no right to act like a female would be unknowledgable or not worthy of asking about routes. His comment implied that she is dumb, or doesn’t understand the sport. Newton has not apologized for his comments, nor has team spokesman Steven Drummond. Female reporters and journalists should be just as respected and treated the same as male reporters. Their gender does not make a difference in their sports knowledge, and they should not be belittled when trying to do their job.

Newton has yet to release a statement.
