Starting the 2016-2017 school year, Houston High School was fortunate to receive fourteen new teachers. The Pony Express interviewed new teacher, Kelsey Gilbert. Ms. Gilbert’s responses have been edited for clarity.
PE: Where did you grow up and go to High School?
KG: I grew up in Olive Branch, Mississippi and graduated from Olive Branch High School in 2008
PE: What did you enjoy studying or participating in in High School?
KG: I was very involved in high school. I was on the board of the Interact Club, Student Leadership Council, Peer Counselors, in addition to playing volleyball some of my time in high school.
PE: Where did you go to college?
KG: Ole Miss
PE: What did you study/participate in in college?
KG: I was an Ole Miss ambassador and Diamond Girl.
PE: Do you have any children and/or pets?
KG: 2 Kids, John Eric 5 and Caroline 3 and 2 dogs, Deuce and Drake
PE: Have you ever taught before? If so, where and for how long?
KG: This is my 4th year teaching. I taught 3 years previously at Southaven Elementary School in the 1st grade.
PE: What’s your favorite part about Houston High?
KG: The students have been great to work with and the teachers have been so welcoming.
PE: What’s your favorite part about being a teacher?
KG: Seeing your students grow daily and building relationships with each individual student.
PE: What would you be doing if you weren’t teaching?
KG: Crafting or taking my kids somewhere fun.
PE: How is working at Houston different from what you’ve done before?
KG: The students, this is my first time working with high school students EVER! They have all been so wonderful though!
