Olympic Robbery

Olympic Robbery

Early on the morning of August 14th four Olympic gold medal winners; Ryan Lochte, Jimmy Feigen, Jack Conger, and Gunnar Bentz were just finishing up a night of celebration in Rio. They were on their way back to the Olympic village when, according to them, their taxi was stopped by gun men and they were robbed. When the athletes returned to the Olympic village they reported the robbery, with Ryan Lochte giving a vivid account of the robbery.

It was after this that a spokesman for the Olympic committee gave a statement claiming that the robbery never took place, although the swimmers still claimed their statements were valid. Many thought that this was the Olympic committee trying to cover up yet another incident at the highly controversial Rio games, but then Rio’s police got involved. They claimed that the team members were not able to give basic details and at times contradicted each other. It was around this time that Lochte began to change his initial statement. The Olympic Committee then stated they had enough evidence to say with certainty that the robbery indeed never took place. It was also around this time that a CCTV video was discovered, showing the team members engaging in a dispute between them and a gas station owner and security guard.

While the Rio games has certainly been a messy one, the add-on provided by these 4 swimmers has certainly not helped. Hopefully future athletes learn from this incident and no more false reports will occur.
