Man on Hernando-DeSoto Bridge

On Sunday, April 3rd, Interstate-40 eastbound and westbound lanes were shut down from 12:42 to 4:30 p.m. due to a man walking atop the Hernando-DeSoto Bridge.

The man threatened to jump, but officers went to the scene to attempt to speak with him about stepping down. The man had been posting pictures to Facebook about potentially ending his life, and while standing on the bridge, he posted photos of his view with the caption, “a beautiful view, of my last day.”

After three long hours, officers were able to successfully convince the man to safety and he was taken into custody. He is now undergoing an evaluation and is seeking psychological help.

Because traffic was backed up all the way from the Danny Thomas Boulevard exit, vehicles were redirected to I-55.
