Congressman Drinks from Pope’s Cup

As you may already know, for the past week, Pope Francis has been on his first US tour. He visited Washington, D.C., New York City, and Philadelphia. While in Washington, he addressed a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress in the House Chamber of the U.S. Capitol.

For Rep. Bob Brady of Philadelphia, the pope’s address and his presence was rather significant, but what really caught Brady’s eye was the pope’s water glass. As the pope left the chamber after his address, Brady was spotted cautiously sneaking the pope’s glass from the podium and taking it back to his office.

Once at his office, he sipped from the “holy water” and then shared it with his wife and two staffers. After he let another congressman and his family dip their hand in the glass, he put the left over water into a bottle so that he could bless his grandchildren later.

According to Brady’s chief of staff, Brady “is a Catholic and has immense respect for the Holy Father.” He even intends to pay for the glass he took from Capitol Hill.

Interestingly enough, this is not Brady’s first cup-stealing incident. During President Obama’s first inauguration, Brady acquired Obama’s glass. However, Brady did not drink out of his glass because “it was purely political.”

Now, the world is wondering, will Brady continue gathering used glasses by important people? How many more will he acquire? I guess we will just have to wait and see.
