What Actually Happened at the 2015 VMAs

Each fall, the world’s biggest popstars round up for a night full of extremely eccentric outfits (including Lady Gaga’s infamous meat dress), an overabundance of the craziest celebrity drama, and some of the wackiest things ever said on television. Yes, I am talking about MTV’s VMAs.

The 2015 VMAs were, well how do I put it, interesting. Miley Cyrus hosted the evening, and her hosting skills were pretty inadequate. Of course, the entire role of a host is to keep the audience entertained, but it seemed the only way she could keep the show going was with the driest and cheesiest humor possible. Throughout the show, all I could think about was how much her current humor reminded me of her Disney humor on Hannah Montana. She was just an overall mess.

Let’s talk about her outfits. Every time there was a camera on Miley, she was wearing an even more bizarre outfit than before. On social media, her outfits were compared to things such as the plastic rings that hold canned beverages and the colorful candy Mentos. She is the queen of getting as close to naked as possible while somehow still not considered nude (minus her camera slip-up during the commercial break) .Yo Miley, Imma let you do what you want, but why?

The outfits weren’t the only things turning heads that night. Viewers definitely had their eyes glued to the screen after Nicki Minaj put Miley Cyrus on blast.           When Minaj went on stage to receive her award, she did her acknowledgments and then from out of nowhere, goes, “Back to this b*tch that had a lot of stuff to say about me in the press, what’s good!” referring to Miley. Leading up to the VMAs, Miley had commented on Minaj and Taylor Swift’s Twitter debate, saying, “What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It’s not very polite… If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But don’t make it just about yourself.” Lesson learned: stay away from Minaj’s bad side.

Now as Miley and Minaj battled it out, Taylor Swift and Kanye West seemed to smooth things out after the 2009 VMAs when Kanye went on stage after Swift received an award, and he went on to say that Beyoncé deserved that award. This year, Swift had the opportunity to explain how much she respected him by introducing his Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.

When Kanye went up to receive his award, he proceeded to give one of the most attention-grabbing speeches of 2015. The highlight of his 20-minute rant was the announcement that he was running for U.S. President in 2020. Yeah, it was a pretty captivating rant, and if you missed it or would like to revisit the wonderfulness, here is the link: http://www.mtv.com/ontv/vma/videos/kanye-west-vma-vanguard-speech/1231121/

Throughout the night, a few other things happened, including: Justin Bieber crying during a performance, the Weeknd and Twenty One Pilots gave fantastic performances, and some people actually won awards. All in all, the VMAs were amusing, but have just come to be a night full of overwhelming, petty celebrity drama. Hardly any part of the night was actually spent discussing music videos, and honestly, the VMAs have gone downhill recently. There is an apparent lack of star power and big time stars have made an effect on the show. They have become my least favorite award show because of all this celebrity garbage.
