Memphis Grizzlies Playoff Preview

As the 2014-2015 NBA season drew to a close this past Wednesday, the city of Memphis let out a sigh of relief. Over the past two months, the Memphis Grizzlies, which entered the All-star break as one of the hottest teams in the NBA, had tragically fallen into a tailspin as the club went 16-13 since February 22. Ending their regular season with a convincing win against the Indiana Pacers, Memphis finally appears to have gotten back on the right track as the Grizzlies looked to make yet another successful playoff appearance.

Currently leading the Portland Trailblazers 1-0 in the first round of the playoffs, Memphis fans seem confident that their beloved men in blue will advance to the second round where it is assumed that they will face the league-best Golden State Warriors. Fortunately for Memphis, starting point guard Mike Conley and defensive anchor Tony Allen both returned to the lineup in game one of the series against Portland, after both players missed several games due to injury. All-star center Marc Gasol has also recently battled injury, dealing with a nagging ankle sprain, but has continued to perform at an all-star level.

The Trailblazers have also dealt with their share of injuries. Rising star Wesley Matthews and Aaron Afflalo are out for the rest of the season and several other contributors are questionable for the playoffs. While it is never wise to assume that one’s team will coast through a playoff series, Memphis’s regular season sweep of the Trailblazers, as well as its current 2-0 series lead over Portland, indicates that the Grizzlies are quite likely to escape the first round.
