Reflections on Band

Bryson Russell, Reporter

The anticipation of October 25th, the date of the Bandmasters championship, made The Houston Band practice harder then ever before. They spent every second devoting their time to improving their show “Reflections of Earth”. In 2007, The Houston Band performed this very same show at the Memphis Liberty Bowl, infamously scoring .005 points away from first place. This year was a chance for our band to redeem that fatal score, a chance to prove that such a beautiful show should demand 1st place. Out of all of our competitions, Bandmasters was the one that we had been preparing for most.

This competition meant the beginning and the end of our marching season. Standing with the band during the awards, hearing the announcer call class AAAA, and waiting to hear each placement was a brutal and tear jerking experience. Not only as a band but also as a close family, we held hands and locked arms as we waited in silence while each place was called. The closer they got to calling first place, the more intense the atmosphere became. Tears arose in all of our eyes as they reached second place.
The announcer called the 2014 Bandmasters Reserve Grand Champion, The Houston Band. Even though all our hard work only got us second place, Mr. Smith, our band director, made it clear that he was proud to say our performance was outstanding! The remainder of the school year we will have our concert season. We will be performing concerts from time to time and be having our annual spring trip.
