Cut it Up With Sza!

Kelsee Woods, Reporter

Solana Rowe, better known as her stage name SZA, is the newest member of the American Independent rap label—TDE. Her music style is an interesting blend of smooth afro-centric vibes with keys of the 60’s riding waves of trippy reggae. The rhythms of her music are equally intriguing as her lyrics. With hidden meanings, word play, and strong metaphors, SZA shares raw emotions with no filters.

She makes obvious progression with each project she releases, as they seem to master the one before. It started with her first extended play, See.SZA.Run that was released October 29, 2012 and seemed to barely catch attention at all. Her next EP, S, created a positive buzz in the underground world and got her signed to her current label three months later.

Her creativity continued when she released her third EP, Z, pushing her on the brink of the mainstream world.

SZA’s voice has been described as “high vapory husk and sky-high falsetto” and has been classified as an alternative R&B artist. Her persona and style are just as unique as her art. She stands strongly on embracing her imperfections and living solely on the desires of her heart. As one of the few female artists that don’t bring attention to her body, she makes a clear statement by simply being herself.
